Suitability of Cavern Development

The hilly terrain and geology of Hong Kong offer excellent opportunities for rock cavern development. In 2011, the Civil Engineering and Development Department developed a cavern suitability map that delineates areas considered suitable for developing rock caverns throughout the territory. The map shows that about two-thirds of the land area of Hong Kong is suitable for rock cavern development.

Conservatively assuming that 5% of this area could be made available for rock cavern development, this could provide some 3,500 ha of developable land (equivalent to about 180 nos. of Victoria Park).

What are Rock caverns? Rock caverns refer to large man-made spaces in rock,
which offer many beneficial applications in terms of land uses
